The following article was published in Vogue Japan December 2011 – here’s a version in English below.

Percy & Read Hair

Session stylists, Paul Percival and Adam Reed opened Percy & Reed, in London’s West End in 2007.   Four years on they have introduced a collection of shampoos, conditioners and styling products.  Hand drawn illustrations of long locked girls combined with handwritten product names and amusing phrases are chic and fun.   Products are good, too.

There are three shampoos and conditioners – Spendidly Silky Moisturising, Bountifully Bouncy Volumising and Really Rather Radiant Colour and Shine.   Shampoos are £14 and conditioners, £16.  There are two conditioning masks including the intensely restorative, Totally TLC Hydrating Mask (£20) with coconut and mango oil, and marshmallow extract.  It comes with a hair cap designed by Jessica May Underwood, to help intensify the deep conditioning benefits.

It’s the styling products that belie the session styling background of the dynamic duo.  Percival, originally trained by Eugene Souleiman at Trevor Sorbie, has worked with top musicians including Bjork and Kylie Minogue.  Reed’s celebrity client base includes Ellie Goulding, Diane Kruger and Agness Deyn.  He is a familiar fixture backstage at London Fashion Week as head stylist for shows including Henry Holland, Julien McFonald, and Marios Schwab.

A blow-dry volume boosting cream, Superstar Supersized Bodifying Cream (£14), with elderflower extract, leaves hair soft, smooth and bouncy, without heaviness.   Essential session stylist kit includes a fine, firm hold hairspray, Frightfully Firm Session Hold Hairspray (£12); a dry shampoo, No Fuss Fabulousness Dry Shampoo (£12) and a sea salt spray, Wonderfully Wavy Texturising Spray (£14), with white willow leaf extract designed to add texture without leaving hair crisp to the touch.

Spring with Annee de Mamiel [1314 COMMENTS]

After a winter rest, the power of springtime surges through nature and through us.  Ancient Chinese believed that we should live in harmony with the natural cycles of our environment and recognize the naturally occurring ebb and flow of energy reflected in our bodies.  de Mamiel Spring Facial Oil is blended to work in synergy with these changes and put back what nature takes out at a time when it is needed.

Spring is the perfect time to do two things: Release and Express. The expansive energy of the new season is outward moving, so we are primed to move stagnant, useless, sluggish and weary ways out of our bodies and lives and release the heaviness that has been stored all winter.  We need to rid the body of toxins and let go to allow new growth to come through.  Once we do this, we are freed up to start over, grow freshly, heal, create, and share our new blossoms with the world!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring represents the element of wood.  Wood makes us feel that we need free expression, to find our way, to try new things and meet new people.  It is open and energetic and can lead to great enthusiasm and new endeavours.  Spring is also represented by the liver and gall bladder.  The liver governs the unclogging of ‘qi’ and emotions. The free flow of ‘qi’ in turn will ensure the free flow of blood, digestion and water.

Having come from a place of dryness (Winter), the sudden energy bursts of Spring can cause skin to become oily or show signs of inflammation (acne) or allergens.  It is time to be kind to our skin, supporting the detoxification process with gentle nourishment on the inside.  de Mamiel Spring Facial Oil contains ingredients that will replace the lost moisture, cleanse and flush out winter congestion, soothe any associated inflammation and encourage new skin growth.  This will plump up the skin and bring back colour to the face revealing a clear, refreshed and invigorated complexion.

In preparation for the Equinox on 20 March, I will be releasing my Spring seasonal facial oil for pre-sale orders on 5 March, which is a cleansing and energising oil designed to clear out the stagnation of the winter months and encourage skin regeneration during the spring season.

The benefits:

  • Helps to boost circulation and stimulate the detoxification process to combat congestion and puffiness and bring a healthy glow back to grey, dull-looking skin.

  • Cleans and decongests skin with anti-microbial properties, normalising sebum production and soothing and cooling any sensitive areas or blemishes.  Especially useful for oily patches or acne-prone skin.

  • Supports the skin’s natural renewal cycle with antioxidants and healing oils that help to build immunity, protect and repair the skin.

  • Contains a rejuvenating complex of organic ingredients including essential oils, plant extracts and oils, high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids.

  • The refreshing and nurturing aroma gives you the energy and motivation to cleanse the body, release sluggish feelings and welcome in the new experiences brought on by Spring.

  • Your skin will look clear, revitalised and well-nourished and feel soft, smooth and replenished with moisture.

How to use:

Smooth 4-5 drops onto cleansed face and neck.  Pause for a moment, cup your hands and cover your nose and mouth, breathe deeply for a count of three, then slowly breathe out for a count of five, releasing all tension. Massage gently with small, circular upwards movements from the centre out until absorbed.
