Wheat-free Summer
Wheat-free Summer
I have recently been reading excerpts from a book called Wheat Belly about how a wheat-free diet can aid weight loss. Nothing new here I suppose but author and top cardiologist, Dr William Davis, claims that modern farming techniques has turned wheat into a 'super-carbohydrate' which is doing all sorts of bad things for our bodies. This is not to say all wheat is to blame but for the most part it is turning into blood sugar much faster than any other kind of food in our body which is a great big warning signal to rises in insulin levels and therefore resulting in an extra tyre around the waist line.
One of my favourite skin care specialists in London is called Bharti Vyas and before I moved to the US I would see her regularly at her small beauty salon for her extraordinary facials, lymphatic drainage to my legs, and her daughter just happened to be the best at reflexology. Bharti's Indian background meant she strongly believed in a wheat and dairy-free diet for at least 3 months of the year. Being a vegetarian I struggle to follow that diet but my husband and best friend followed Bharti's advice and religiously each year looked the best I have ever seen them. Sadly moving to a country with endless ice cream was too much of a temptation for my husband!
I am going to attempt to cut my wheat down drastically over the next couple of months, prompted by the fact that I believe my bikini days are over and middle age spread has most certainly spread. On June 14th we are holding our first wellness event at Shen with lots going on in store including the author Jolene Hart of Eat Pretty. It looks the most fascinating book and highlights food that can age us (wheat is actually a big culprit here making you age faster) and food that can make us healthier and good for our skin. The saying "you are what you eat" rings loud and clear here and I am very excited to hear what Jolene recommends to us all as diet has transformed her life and diet.
There's lots more to tell you about our wellness event and we shall fill you in next week. However, put Saturday June 14th in your diary with giveaways, fresh juices, make up and lots more.
